What are task words?

Task words: Task words are the words or phrases in a question or statement that tell you what to do. Common examples of task words are 'discuss', 'evaluate', 'explain, outline. Look for the task word in the assessment task you are working on. 

Analyse: Identify the main features then examine closely; examine in parts; show how the parts relate to the whole

Examine: Give a detailed description of the main points

Evaluate: Weigh up arguments for and against something; give strengths and weaknesses of, and give your opinion.

Define: Explain the exact meaning of a key term.
Describe: Give the facts about something and if the question refers to a process, give a detailed account in sequential order
Discuss: Give a reasoned argument for and against a particular issue and you can also give your opinion
Explain: Provide details to give the reader an understanding of
Identify: State the key features

Justify: Demonstrate by giving evidence
List: Make points briefly and put them in order
Outline: Briefly indicate the key features
