De Stijl or 'The Style'

De Stijl 1917

DeStijl, which is Dutch for 'The Style', was a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917. Proponents of De Stijl sought to express a new ideal of harmony and order. They advocated abstraction and minimised design to the essentials of form and colour: they simplified visual compositions by using vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colours along with black and white. The fundamental principle of the geometry of the straight line, the square and the rectangle was combined with strong asymmetrical composition.

Key artists and designers of the period are:

Piet Mondrian

Theo van Doesburg

Jacobus Oud

Vilmos Huszar

Gerrit Rietveld

Le Corbusier
