A guide for VCE students studying Art and Design Movements

Art Deco

Art Deco replaced Art Nouveau after World War 1 as the major international decorative style, and continued until World War 11. Art Deco represented the style of the Machine Age, replacing Art Nouveau's flowing motifs with streamlined geometric shapes and designs that represented power, speed and modern technology. Simplification and abstraction were the hallmarks of Art Deco; it's style was used in architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion design and graphic arts. Art Deco is characterised by the use of materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, inlaid wood and laquer.
